Loving My Belly
AKA, The Ultimate Self Belly Massage
Feeling comfortable and at home within your body is a journey that many of us have struggled with from a very young age, especially as women. In my case, I always felt a need to fit into “this thin yet fit” woman body stereotype, and constantly wanting to over do and over push my body to meet this image. If you know me in person, you will know that yes I am in fact thin, and yes I am strong as well, but this ironically never happened for me until I actually stopped pushing my body to meet certain standards and allowed myself to love my body 1000%!
For this entry I want to focus on the belly area of our bodies - our hara or manipura chakra, our center of creation and manifestation. House to our inner power, inner will & sense of self. The place where we cultivate our strength, resilience & where we also alchemize our emotions, feelings and sexual energy. Not only is this where our personal power lives but also a key point to protect and cultivate our sacred energy.
On top of this, our navel center is also responsible for digesting and processing our:
Thoughts, worries and anxieties. Basically everything that happens in our minds is reflected in our bellies (“as above, as below”)
Emotions and feelings on a 24/7 basis - the belly works like a sponge
F.O.O.D. Food - All the actual tangible things we feed our bodies, which usually if we’re honest isn’t the best in quality nor quantity
Daily interactions - the places we visit, conversations we have, things we see in social media, other people’s energies, etc.
WOW! That’s a lot of processing and digesting having to be done by 1 single system. And, on top of that, we don’t really allow ourselves proper rest nor adequate nourishment that supports our belly in processing this fast paced reality. So it really doesn't take a genius to understand why many of us go through life with digestive issues - slow digestion, congestion, bloating, colitis, gastritis and so on…
This was me throughout my teenage & college years - living with a bloated belly 24/7. From ages 13 to 23 I lived with a constipated belly, carrying excess weight in this area, feeling pain, shame and guilt for about a decade (wtf!). The stress from school, the many hours spent sitting on a desk, the total f*ed up eating time schedules, and then all the negativity I felt towards my body were seriously detrimental to my digestive system.
Until I understood that no amount of exercise, no form of quick fix me up diet and no western medicine otc-pill-approach would really allow myself to heal my digestive system, I decided to approach this condition from a completely different lens. And that is, the ENERGETIC LENSE of course. Now before jumping into this practice, there’s a few things you should know:
This self belly massage is best practiced first thing in morning when you’re on an empty stomach
You will need a thick blanket (such as a restorative yoga blanket) or a thick towel for this practice, plus a yoga matt or something to lie on
The Ultimate Self Belly Massage can be practiced for 5 mins up to 30 mins (or as long as you wish for) on a daily basis
It’s very probable that gas and air want to come out of your body, allow yourself to fart or burp if needed (air in the digestive system are excess thoughts)
I highly recommend for you to rest after this practice & drink a warm ginger and lemon tea to keep the detoxification process going
If you’re pregnant, please do not practice this. You may practice this massage postpartum, specially to bring all the organs back into place, but not while pregnant!
